Uppu Seedai Recipe - Gokulashtami special

 This is a salty snack, prepared during gokulashtami.Recipe is easy. A small tip is not make the seedai balls smooth, because there are many chances that the seedai can explode, Be cautious while frying the seedai. Make sure the seedai balls are not smooth or prick once with a tooth pick before frying.

Uppu Seedai/Cheedai


1 cup Rice flour(Store bought)
2 tbsp Urad Dal Flour - (Fry the urad dhal for 3- 5 min or until dhal turns light brown. Let it cool and powder dhal in a blender.)
1/2 tbsp white sesame seeds
1 tsp cumin
2 tbsp grated coconut (If using frozen, thaw before using- rinse the grated coconut in cold running water for few minutes)
2 tbsp butter, at room temperature
salt to taste
1/2 tsp Asafoetida powder


Mix all the ingredients using water. Make a soft dough. Make small balls out of the dough.
Heat the oil(canola or vegetable oil) on medium high.
To test whether the the oil id hot drop a small piece of the dough to see it sear and sizzle.
Fry the ball on medium low. Stir while frying the seedai balls.
You will hear the sound from the seedai while stirring with a steel serving spoon and bubble would have reduced by this time.
Transfer the contents to the bowl layered with paper bowl, to remove excess oil.
Enjoy seedai on gokulashtami or any day with masala chai..
